UGA invests $8.5 million to bolster campus security

The University of Georgia (UGA) announced the allocation of $8.5 million in funds to improve safety and security around the downtown Athens campus.
The funding will help hire 10 more UGA police officers and civilian safety staff, offer more overnight transit options and add more security cameras and lighting around campus and surrounding areas. UGA will work with Athens-Clarke County police to determine where best to install new lighting and cameras along off-campus pathways often used by students.
The funds will also support a permanent infrastructure budget increase at UGA, allowing for annual security reviews and maintenance.
