April is workplace violence awareness month and statistics show women are nearly three times more likely to be murdered on the job, compared to men, according to a report from the National Council for Home Safety and Security (NCHSS).

The most common method of killing another person from 2010 through 2016 was by using a gun, says the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

State laws that require gun purchasers to obtain a license contingent on passing a background check performed by state or local law enforcement are associated with a 14 percent reduction in firearm homicides in large, urban counties, says a new study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Homicides across dozens of U.S. cities increased by nine percent over the first three months of 2016 compared to the same period last year.

A new report says that terrorism continues to rise, with over 32,000 people killed in terrorist attacks in 2014, the highest number recorded.

Homicide and assault rates have decreased significantly since 1980, but overall rates of violence remain high.

The report calls for more background checks and stronger controls over certain high-risk groups such as convicted criminals and younger age groups.

Chicago is calling in extra help after the city's homicide rate outpaces New York City, which has twice as many people as Chicago.
