According to a task force study regarding Capitol security led by retired Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honore and appointed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, there are several steps the government can take to boost effective security around the campus.

The report entailed a number of suggestions to better position security at the building, including hiring of more Capitol police to fill existing gaps as well as investing in new officer training.

Physical security recommendations included mobile or retractable fencing options around the perimeter to be used during events or increased threat levels.

The report also suggests deploying screening portals for staff and visitors around the complex to make it easier for Capitol Police to monitor visitors seeking to enter the building.
