Canadian transportation company Metrolinx is working on opening a new bus depot near Union Station in Toronto in early December. In preparation of opening, Metrolinx staged a mock disaster that included included response from several agencies throughout the city, as well as served to test the company's systems in place.
Spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins who tweeted and blogged about the event, said that the large-scale emergency exercise allows the company and agencies to prepare for unexpected incidents, including simulated fatalities. The exercise involved emergency vehicles with sirens, "urgent activity" around the bus depot, as well as participation from Toronto Fire, Toronto Police Services and many other city officials.
Aikins said the exercise required months of preparation and the help of hundreds of volunteer actors. All COVID-19 health safety protocols were adhered to throughout the exercise.
This emergency exercise is one of many the provincial transit agency does throughout the year to ensure the safety of both customers and staff.
