Following the lead of other major airports throughout Europe, Brussels Airport in Zaventem plans to deploy facial recognition scanners next year, according to a report by Flanders Today.
The pilot project will start with the deployment of six e-gates that use facial recognition software, and will be offered to all citizens of the European Union who are travelling from outside the Schengen area.
This trial audience will include citizens from 22 of the 28 EU member states, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
After the pilot project has been implemented for some time, its overall performance will later be reviewed to decide whether or not to extend the system.
