A member of the Australian Parliament revealed a security flaw in the Parliament building Monday when he was able to successfully smuggle a fake pipe bomb and dynamite sticks in undetected, according to the International Business Times.
Liberal MP Bill Heffernan showed the police, who were being asked about new screening measures in a parliamentary hearing, the fake devices to prove a point, describing the building’s security as a joke, as officials and employees are not subject to a metal detector security check and X-ray screening. The new measures exempt MPs, but not media, contractors and the public, the article says.
Australian Federal Police head Tony Negus admitted the risks posed by the current arrangements, which were put in place to cut costs.
