Noe Valley neighbors say that a suspect has been taking packages off front porches for months, but despite their best efforts – calling police, confronting him on porches, snapping pictures of the “Bicycle Bandit” – police had not been able to make an arrest, according to an article from NBC News.
Until, however, one woman set up a camera and kept bear spray at the ready. On Tuesday, her camera captured the suspect opening her gate and taking a package. The footage also shows the woman chasing the suspect, the article says.
She tweeted to her followers that she had nabbed him with bear spray, but he ran away in pain. She was able to catch up with him and make a citizen’s arrest until police arrived. The man now charged with the thefts, 51-year-old Andy Anduha, now faces up to six years in prison if convicted on all counts.
And while neighbors say it was a brave move, police are not encouraging people to confront criminal suspects.
