Facebook users will soon be able to sign up and receive AMBER Alerts issued in their area via Facebook.

The social-networking site is teaming up with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) for the initiative. More details will be provided at a press conference today in Virginia, which will also commemorate the 15th anniversary of the abduction and murder of Amber Hagerman, who was abducted and killed in 1996.

A year after her murder, officials in the Dallas/Forth Worth area implemented the first local AMBER Alerts, which provide bulletins about serious child-abduction cases. The network has since grown to 120 AMBER plans nationwide, as well as international efforts in Canada, England, France, Greece, Portugal and more. It has been credited with the safe recovery of 525 children.
