The United States has announced the arrests of 10 people for allegedly spying for Russia.

In a statement, the Justice Department said eight Russian intelligence officers were arrested on June 27 "for allegedly carrying out long-term, deep-cover assignments in the United States" on behalf of Russia.

Two additional defendants were also arrested "for allegedly participating in the same Russian intelligence program within the United States."

Each of the 10 was charged "with conspiring to act as unlawful agents of the Russian Federation within the United States." Nine of the defendants also face charges of "conspiracy to commit money laundering." An 11th suspect remains at large.
