The Ontario, Canada, Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian has received a formal complaint charging that privacy laws will be violated by security cameras being installed throughout Canada's largest public transit network. Experts interviewed by Security Magazine say this will likely be a test case for other jurisdictions.
The Toronto Transit Commission, which provides 1.4 million rides each weekday, is in the process of installing up to 10,000 security cameras in buses, streetcars and the subway. It now has about 1,500 cameras.
South of the Canadian border, numerous transit systems in metropolitan areas, have or are employing security cameras and monitoring.
