TSA to Extend Risk-Based Screening to Luggage

June 9, 2014

The Transportation Security Administration is continuing its shift away from a standard, universal assumption of risk, including the PreCheck lines at 115 airports to let passengers who have passed a background check to travel with a lighter security check. The TSA now plans to apply this risk-based security system to the screening of luggage. Under the current system, every back gets the same level of scrutiny, The Los Angeles Times reports.

As part of a $2.2-billion plan over the next five years, the TSA says it will be adopting a system to identify the risk level of each bag based on information about its owner. Higher-risk passengers’ luggage would receive a more thorough screening.
