February 18, 2025

Casinos in Michigan were targeted by a ransomware attack. The ransomware attack prompted Kewadin Casinos in the following Michigan cities to shut down:

  • Manistique
  • Hessel
  • St. Ignace
  • Christmas
  • Sault Ste. Marie

Currently, hotels are open to present guests, but new guests are unable to check in.

Sault Tribe Chairman Austin Lowes stated, “Our hope is that this issue gets resolved within a week, but we are prepared for it to last longer.”

The ransomware attack targeted the the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, the owners and operators of the affected casinos. Third-party experts have been hired to restore gaming functions online as well as to investigate the data security event. In addition to gaming, the incident also affected tribal administration, such as health and business operations.
